| Hansjorg Wyss, chairman of Synthes, an international medical-device company, whose North American headquarters are in West Chester, Pa., has pledged $125-million to Harvard University to expand its Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. The money will be paid out over the next five years and will endow seven professorships at the institution and support its operations. Mr. Wyss earned an MBA from the university's business school in 1965. He gave the business school $25-million in 2004 for its Ph.D. program. |

| Guy E. Beatty Jr., the retired founder of Beatty Companies, a McLean, Va., firm that develops commercial real estate, has pledged $60-million to the College of Charleston, in South Carolina. Mr. Beatty has set up a trust that will allow the college to receive the money in $2-million yearly installments once he dies. Of the annual $2-million payments, Mr. Beatty has stipulated that $1-million must be used for scholarships, and $1-million should support campus facilities and infrastructure. Mr. Beatty serves on the Board of Governors of the college's School of Business and Economics. One of his children is a 1985 graduate of the college, and a grandson graduated in 2006. |

| Lorry I. Lokey, the founder of Business Wire, a San Francisco company that distributes press releases, has pledged $42-million to Stanford University School of Medicine for a new center for stem-cell research. The money comes on top of a $33-million commitment Mr. Lokey made to support the center last year. The research center, which the university plans to name for Mr. Lokey, is scheduled to open in 2010. Mr. Lokey graduated from Stanford in 1949. |

| Andrew H. Tisch, the co-chairman of the Loews Corporation, in New York, and his wife, Ann, a former reporter for NBC, have pledged $35-million to Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y. The money will endow professorships across academic departments. Mr. Tisch graduated from the university in 1971. |

| Lynda and Stewart Resnick, who own Paramount Farming Companies, Pom Wonderful, Fiji Water, and Teleflora, all in Los Angeles, have given $20-million in cash and pledged artwork valued at approximately $10-million to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The cash gift will help pay for one of the museum complex's new buildings. The museum will receive the artworks upon the Resnicks' deaths. Ms. Resnick serves on the museum's Board of Trustees, and is chairwoman of its acquisitions committee. |

| David Rockefeller, a retired chairman of Chase Manhattan Bank, and the only living child of John D. Rockefeller Jr., has pledge $25-million to the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, in Pocantico Hills, N.Y. The money -- which the center will receive upon Mr. Rockefeller's death -- will be used for endowment. Mr. Rockefeller and his daughter, Peggy Dulany, founded the 80-acre farm and agricultural-education center in 2004. |
